Lion’s Head Mountain Scenic Area
Lion’s Head Mountain Scenic Area Trail is the most famous attraction in Nanzhuang that many visitors acknowledged. For many Taiwanese who are over 50 years old, Lion's Head Mountain Scenic Area is cherished in their collective memory, because many of them had gone hiking here when they were young. Located at the intersection of Nanzhuang, Miaoli, and Emei, Hsinchu, the Lion's Head Mountain received its name because of its lion-head appearance. With a large number of temples and shrines built along the way, Lion's Head Mountain Scenic Area is also a religious destination for some people to find spiritual peace.
Nanzhuang Old Street / Old Post Office / Osmanthus Alley
There was a "coal rush" in Nanzhuang and the population has once reached 30,000 people. However, after the minepit ran out coal, the prosperity was over. But there are things that were left from that prosperous time period of downtown Nanchuang, for example, the Old Post Office, the Cloth-washing cannel, and the Osmanthus Alley. The Nanzhuang Tourist Center is right beside the Old Street, where you can get travel information and watch some shows on the weekends.
Xiangtian Lake
Xiangtian Lake is also a sacred place for the Saisiyat, an aboriginal group in Taiwan. PaSta'ay, a ritual festival for Saisiyat, is held at the Lake every two years for a small rite, and every ten years for a big rite. The Festival is open to visitors, the dancing, the singing, and the mysterious atmosphere are just remarkable. You should experience once in your life time.
Luchown Tribe
Luchown is a tribe of Taiyai, an aboriginal group. Taiyai has the second most population of Taiwanes aboriginals. They usually live in the mountain with rivers because it was better to defend the enemy and get water. A few years ago, a car commercial was filmed in Luchown Tribe and it became a famous attraction of Nanzhuang. Most visitors are stunned at the spiritual beauty of this place.
Shenxian Valley
Shenxian Valley is located at the Donghe River. The strong stream water cut out this breathtaking valley. The entrance of Shenxian Valley is right by the Miaoli Line No. 21. It takes you only 5 minutes to walk from the entrance down to the valley. Also, there's a Taiyai aboriginal featured suspension bridge that could take you across the Shenxian Valley to the Shemen Mountain Trail. It is a great place for a half-day trip.
Penglai River Nature Park
Penglai River Nature Park is full of precious ecological resources. A few years ago, a couple of local residents were concerned about the ecological health of the Penglai River, so they built up a team to protect the river from poisoning and electroshock fishing. Also, they built a 1.6 km trail along the River with rocks and wood for tourists to hike. Now the water is clean and so clear that you can see fish all along the River.
Baguali Tribe
Baguali Tribe is formed by 20 Saisiyat families. There are eight different mountains around this tribe, therefore during Japanese colonial period, they called this place "Hakaliki", which means "Eight Mountains". And "Baquali" was the romanization of the Japanese. Come and visit this tribe to enjoy original Saisiyat dance performances, authentic Saisiyat food and buy some Saisiyat handcrafts for souvenir. This is the best place to experience the culture of Saisiyat!
Hiking Trails
For those who likes to go hiking, you won't be disappointed when traveling in Nanchaung. There are 18 hiking trails in Nanchuang and the Lion's Head Mountain Scenic Area has the most famous one. You can discover various species of plants, old logging trails and beautiful mountain views. It is definitely worth of a try.
Saisiyat Museum
Saisiyat Museum is right beside the Xiangtian Lake, and it is surrounded by the forest. The famous PaSta'ay was held at the square in front of the museum. The building is covered by the Saisiyat bamboo weaving decoration. The first floor is a restaurant and the second floor is the exhibition space. There are various exhitbitions display in the museum from time to time. The third floor is office space and classrooms.
